Basics
What does UUusage do?
UUusage is a menu bar app for macOS. It shows how much of each AI coding limit is left, when each window resets, and whether your current pace is likely to use it up first. A History view adds token totals over time, and an optional floating bar keeps one ring per service at the edge of your screen.
What do I need to run it?
A Mac running macOS 14 or later. UUusage is planned for distribution and updates through the Mac App Store only; the store link is not available yet. The iPhone app and Mac–iPhone sync are not part of the first release.
Which services are supported?
- Claude Code and Codex — read from a folder you authorise on this Mac.
- GitHub Copilot — connect with a fine-grained token that has read access to your plan.
- DeepSeek and Kimi — connect with an API key to see your account balance. Kimi means the Moonshot Open Platform balance, not a Kimi Code membership.
- MiniMax — connect with an M Plan key to see remaining plan quota (beta).
- Antigravity, Cursor and Grok — can't be read automatically yet. UUusage shows a card with a link to the service's own usage page and doesn't display made-up numbers.
Services can change their data or terms at any time, and some features may stop working until an update is available.
Is UUusage made by Anthropic, OpenAI, GitHub or any of these services?
No. UUusage is an independent app and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by them. Their names and logos belong to their owners and are used only to identify the services it reads.
Connecting services
How does it read Claude Code and Codex, and what permission does it ask for?
Both tools keep usage records in your user folder. UUusage asks you to choose that folder once (a standard macOS file-access prompt) and remembers your choice. It looks only inside what you allowed. For Claude Code it reads session files under projects/; for Codex it reads rollout-*.jsonl session records. It doesn't open Codex's auth.json and doesn't read account credentials. You can change the folder or stop access in Settings → Services.
How does UUusage show Claude Code's 5-hour and weekly limits?
Token history works with read-only access. Showing the limits is optional and needs one change: when you choose “Also show limits”, UUusage shows you the exact old and new command first, then sets Claude Code's statusLine entry in settings.json so Claude Code writes its current limit numbers to a .uusage folder next to its records. UUusage keeps a copy of your previous setting in your Keychain, and disconnecting the service offers to restore it. The default choice is “Token usage only”, which doesn't touch your Claude Code settings.
Do I have to sign in to Claude or Codex?
No. UUusage doesn't ask for your Claude or Codex sign-in and doesn't reuse their sign-in tokens. It works from the local usage records instead.
Where do my keys and tokens go?
Keys and tokens are stored in your Mac's Keychain on this device only, and are sent only to the service they belong to, over HTTPS, to fetch your usage or balance. Use the narrowest permission a service offers. Disconnecting a service removes its key from the Keychain.
Can I add more than one account?
Yes for Claude Code and Codex: each account uses its own folder, and you can give each a nickname such as Work or Personal. Several Codex accounts is a setup the Codex documentation doesn't describe, so treat it as best effort.
Limits, tokens and resets
What's the difference between a limit (quota) and tokens?
Limits are what a provider lets you use in a window, such as the 5-hour or weekly window. The Now view shows them as left or used, with the reset time, using the figures the provider reports. Tokens are counts from local usage records, shown in History and split into input, output, cache write and cache read. The two measure different things: UUusage doesn't convert a token total into a limit percentage, so a busy token day doesn't map to a fixed number of percent.
How often does it refresh?
By default every 5 minutes. You can choose any whole number from 1 to 60 minutes in Settings. Shorter intervals send more requests to services you connected with a key and may hit their rate limits.
How do I read the reset time?
Each limit shows when its window resets and how long that is from now, for example “Resets 3:30 PM (in 1 hr 18 min)”. These come from the provider's own reset information.
What does “Runs out around …” mean?
It's an estimate. When your current pace would use up a limit before it resets, UUusage says roughly when, and how long before the reset that would be. Treat it as a heads-up, not a guarantee; your provider's own dashboard is the authoritative source.
What does History show?
Token totals for the past 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 6 months or year, filtered by service or account, and a heat map of the past 7 days by hour. History is built from usage records, so it only covers services whose local records UUusage can read, and only from the point your data begins. You can export daily token totals per service and account as CSV from Settings → About.
Can it warn me before a limit runs out?
Yes. Alerts are on by default, with a low-limit threshold of 20 percent, plus heads-ups when a limit may run out early and when it resets. A notification names the service nickname and the window, not numbers or account names. macOS asks for notification permission, and you can change it in System Settings.
Privacy and data
Does UUusage read my conversations?
To count tokens it opens usage files that Claude Code and Codex write, and those files can contain conversation text. UUusage extracts dates, token counts, model names and limit numbers, keeps only those, and does not store or upload conversation text.
What does it store and for how long?
On your Mac only: recent detailed samples for about 8 days, daily totals for about 90 days, and long-term daily token totals per service and account for up to about 400 days. Keys, your previous Claude Code setting and the trial start date are in the Keychain. Settings stay on this Mac. The Privacy Policy has the full list.
Does it send my data to you?
No. We don't run a server that receives your usage, and the app contains no analytics, crash-reporting or advertising code. When you connect a service, your Mac contacts that service directly. See the Privacy Policy for the list of hosts.
How do I remove my data?
Disconnect a service in Settings → Services. That removes its key from the Keychain, and for folder-based services you can choose to delete the local data UUusage built from that folder. Exported CSV files are yours to delete. The app doesn't yet have a separate “clear all history” button.
Trial and purchase
How does the free trial work?
The plan is a 21-day free trial that starts when you finish the welcome guide, with a banner as it nears its end. To stop a reinstall from restarting it, the start date is recorded in your Keychain, in iCloud key-value storage if you use iCloud, and compared with the App Store's first-download date. We don't receive this date.
What happens when the trial ends?
UUusage stops updating and keeps showing the last reading it took, marked as stopped. Your connections are not deleted, and exporting usage data still works. Unlock once to continue.
Is it a subscription? What does it cost?
No subscription is planned for the Mac app: it's a free trial followed by a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, with all 1.x updates included. The price, currency and what's included are shown in the App Store before you confirm, and that confirmation is what applies to your purchase. The price isn't final until the app is listed.
How do I restore a purchase?
Use Restore Purchases in Settings → About (License section), or in the purchase panel, on a Mac signed in with the Apple Account that bought it. If a purchase doesn't seem to complete, check your App Store purchase history before trying again.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com; eligibility depends on Apple's policies and the law where you live. See the Terms of Use.
How do I get updates?
Through the Mac App Store. UUusage doesn't check for updates by itself.
Troubleshooting
An account says “Waiting for Claude Code to report limits”.
Limits appear after Claude Code has reported them. Send any message in Claude Code and the account updates. If you chose “Token usage only”, no limits are shown by design.
A service says “Can't connect” or asks me to reconnect.
The key or token may have expired, been revoked or lack the permission needed, or the service may be unreachable. Choose Reconnect and enter a new key. Check that your Mac is online.
History is empty or looks too low.
Make sure you've authorised your user folder in Settings → Services. History only covers records UUusage can read and starts when your data begins, so earlier days are drawn dashed instead of as zero. Numbers can differ from a provider's dashboard or bill, which is the authoritative source.
I don't get notifications.
Check that alerts are on in UUusage Settings and that notifications are allowed for UUusage in System Settings → Notifications.
Does UUusage start when I log in?
Only if you turn on “Open at login”; it's off by default. The Dock icon is also off by default, so UUusage lives in the menu bar.
Which languages does the app support?
English, 简体中文, 日本語, 繁體中文, 한국어, Español, Français and Deutsch. Translations other than English are marked beta.
